The Design Process

design-image1Purple Mountain Jewelry is not a jewelry store that sells only our own designs (although many of our own designs do grace our cases!) or the designs of other artists. We pride ourselves in helping our customers participate in the creation of their own unique piece of jewelry. The custom design process is new to most of our customers. We work hard to map out for them the various steps and manage their expectations of the process.

Getting Started with the Design Process

We first start with the goal. We talk about what the customer wants to achieve. How will the owner wear the piece? What personal preferences or style does the customer like. What elements are we working with: gold, silver, platinum, diamonds, gemstones.

What Does it Cost to Get Started?

Our CAD/CAM design fee is $300 per custom design. This is a non-refundable fee, however, it is credited against the cost of the finished piece should the customer decide to engage Purple Mountain Jewelry to create the one-of-a-kind piece.

Sharing of Design Ideas

Once we determine what the customer wishes to achieve, we provide design ideas from our CAD/CAM system. These are shared with through jpg images, usually through email. If a customer prefers to come back and meet with a designer to view printed pictures, this, too, can be arranged. A refining of ideas then takes place. Two re-designs of the original design are allowed without additional charge.

Approval of the Design and Engagement of Purple Mountain

Once the final perfect design is created, we provide the customer with a quote as to cost and timeframe. It is then up to the customer to determine if and when they wish to proceed. If it is decided that the new custom piece is to be made, a 50% non-refundable deposit is required. The balance is due upon delivery and acceptance of the piece. Some designs will be shown to the customer at the wax stage so that overall dimension can be verified.

Our Goldsmith then proceeds to mill, cast and finish the unique piece. While we try to honor special occasions and dates, the design process, from start to finish, generally takes 8-12 weeks.

Take a minute to enjoy our Portfolio here on the website. It is a collection of our finished pieces.
